Diagnostic Assessments - ADHD and Anxiety

Diagnostic assessments are focused evaluations for concerns such as ADHD and Anxiety Disorders. Unlike psychoeducational or gifted assessments, they do not require a full array of cognitive and academic testing. Instead, information is gathered through a detailed clinical intake, teachers' observations, academic and developmental records, as well as specific standardized testing where appropriate. These assessments help determine whether difficulties with attention, self-regulation, anxiety or emotional regulation are affecting a child’s learning, confidence, or relationships. Families receive a clear explanation of the findings and practical recommendations to support their child at home and at school through a detailed feedback and psychological report.

Who is it for?

Diagnostic assessments are suitable for children and youth when there are concerns about their ability to focus attention, manage their emotions, and regulate their behaviour.  These assessments answer questions related to specific diagnoses such as, "does my child have ADHD?" or "does my teen have social anxiety?".  These assessments are helpful when families want to better understand what may be contributing to a child’s challenges and what supports may be most appropriate. Diagnostic assessments are suitable for children 6 years of age and older.

Parents who have concerns about difficulty focusing, sustaining attention, organizing belongings, completing tasks in a timely manner, or managing impulsive behaviours may consider an ADHD-specific assessment. Some children may also become highly focused on specific interests while struggling to shift attention to other tasks. These patterns can sometimes affect academic progress, friendships, and confidence.

What is the cost?

The cost for a diagnostic assessment is $2400. If ADHD is a specific concern, the cost is reduced to $2160 as less testing and time is required to complete the assessment.

If academic skills are also an area of concern, a full psychoeducational assessment may be more appropriate. A comprehensive psychoeducational assessment is $3,600.

Some extended health or group benefit plans may reimburse part of the fee under psychological services, so families are encouraged to check their coverage before booking.

How is the assessment structured?

The process begins with a one-hour parent meeting to better understand the child’s history and current concerns. Your child then meets with the psychologist for standardized testing in a supportive, one-to-one setting. Testing focuses on information processing and attention-related abilities. The testing session is usually about 2 hours, although it may be divided into shorter sessions for younger children.

What happens once the assessment is complete?

Once the testing results and information from home and school have been reviewed, parents attend an hour-long feedback meeting to discuss the results. The findings and recommendations are summarized in a written report that parents may choose to share with teachers. Recommendations are intended to help parents and educators understand which behavioural and teaching strategies are most likely to support the child.
