Psychoeducational Assessments

A psychoeducational assessment provides a detailed understanding of a student’s thinking, learning, academic skills, and areas of need. The goal is to help families and schools better understand what may be getting in the way of learning, and what supports are likely to be most helpful.

Who is it for?

Students between the ages of 7 and 21 may benefit from a psychoeducational assessment if they are having difficulty understanding, remembering, or applying concepts taught at school. When students fall behind academically, it can affect their confidence, concentration, and motivation, so gaining clarity early can be very helpful.

Many universities and colleges require updated documentation to approve accomodation requests. A psychoeducational assessment or reassessment may be beneficial to justify these accomodations, help students choose programs that align with their learning profile, and make informed decisions about course load, pacing, and supports.

What is the cost?

The cost is $3,360 for an evaluation of learning skills alone, or $3,600 for an evaluation of learning, attention/concentration, and/or emotional functioning.

Post-secondary assessments are also available for students preparing to enter college or university. These assessments are often requested by post-secondary institutions to help inform appropriate academic supports and accommodations. The cost is $3,600.

Some extended health or group benefit plans may reimburse part of the fee under psychological services, so families are encouraged to check their coverage before booking.

How is the assessment structured?

The process begins with a one-hour parent meeting to better understand the child’s history and current concerns. Your child then meets with the psychologist for standardized testing in a supportive, one-to-one setting. Testing looks at thinking abilities and academic skills, and the number and length of appointments may vary depending on the child’s age. Most students attend three separate testing appointments of approximately 1.5 hours each. Testing is not completed as a full-day session.

What happens once the assessment is complete?

Once the testing results and information from home and school have been reviewed, parents attend an hour-long feedback meeting to discuss the results. The findings and recommendations are summarized in a written report that parents may choose to share with teachers. Recommendations are designed to help educators understand which supports and teaching strategies are most likely to help the student succeed.
